Former NSW MP Daryl Maguire was granted bail at a hearing on Tuesday where he faced charges over an alleged cash-for-visas scheme.
During the inquiry, Mr Maguire admitted to using his positions in parliament – including his role as a parliamentary secretary and chair of NSW Asia-Pacific parliamentary friendship group – “with a view to making money” for himself and associates.
Documents filed with the NSW Local Court on Tuesday revealed the charges related to Mr Maguire’s contact with Ms Logan, who he allegedly conspired with between January 2013 and August 2015 for the purposes of securing “false documents” and “false or misleading information” relating to non-citizens. Ms Logan is also facing court for her role in the alleged scheme and on 12 counts of delivering documents with a false statement.Under the scheme outlined before the ICAC inquiry in 2020, visa applicants would allegedly pay Ms Logan for their visas who would then also pay the businesses for signing-off on their immigration forms and saying the foreigners worked there. It’s alleged that the workers never showed up to work and the businesses would be paid to lie about the workers.
Senior prosecutors in the Australian Border Force are prosecuting the case, which lists offences relating to the Commonwealth Criminal Code and the Migration Act.
