A former New South Wales Police officer, Kristian White, has been found guilty of manslaughter in the death of 95-year-old aged-care resident Clare Nowland. The sentencing hearing for White, 35, revealed heartbreaking victim impact statements from Nowland's family, who described their profound grief and anger over her death. Nowland died a week after White tasered her at Yallambee Lodge in Cooma on May 17, 2023.
During the trial, it was revealed that White responded to a call about an elderly resident, Nowland, who was wandering the facility with two knives. Nowland, who had dementia symptoms, was found holding a single steak knife in a nurses' room. Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation, White deployed his taser, fatally injuring Nowland. The court heard 14 victim impact statements from Nowland's family. Her son, Mr. Nowland, expressed shock, disbelief, and anger at the fact that his mother was tasered by a police officer. He questioned how anyone could inflict such harm on an elderly and frail woman. He also shared the family's distress at encountering White in the Cooma community while he was on bail, stating that he should have been immediately placed in custody after the incident.Nowland's daughter, Lesley Lloyd, recounted the agonizing experience of being at her mother's bedside in the hospital. She described the emotional turmoil of witnessing her mother's deteriorating condition due to the head injury caused by the taser. Another daughter, Gemma Murphy, spoke about the indelible impact of watching the body-cam footage of her mother's tasering. She shared the haunting words uttered by White before and after the incident, which now forever torment her. White, visibly subdued throughout the hearing, mostly kept his head bowed, occasionally burying his face in his hands as the family's testimonies were read aloud. The Crown prosecutor argued that White breached his duty of care towards Nowland and committed manslaughter through criminal negligence or by engaging in an unlawful and dangerous act. White was granted bail and subsequently dismissed from the NSW Police Force by Commissioner Karen Webb.
