Energy Harbor, which used to be a subsidiary of FirstEnergy, has been talking about closing the coal fired power plant for years, because newer power plants that use natural gas were more competitive price-wise.

Energy Harbor sent a layoff notice to the state last week, saying that it plans to lay off 140 people who work at the plant in Stratton, a small town between East Liverpool and Steubenville. The company said terminations will happen on a rolling basis, starting in March, as the plant winds down operations through July.
The former Ohio Edison plant came under the FirstEnergy umbrella, and then Energy Harbor in 2019. Energy Harbor used to be a FirstEnergy Corp. subsidiary called FirstEnergy Solutions, but was spun off into an independent company.of several decades ago to install air quality improvements aimed lowering the plant’s environmental impact.cleveland.com
