'Remarkable son': The family of a 32-year-old former rescue helicopter pilot has confirmed his death in a crash north of Melbourne mountdisappointment victoria

A 32-year-old former Westpac rescue helicopter pilot and a 73-year-old “stalwart of the global meat industry” were among five people who died in a catastrophic helicopter crash at Mount Disappointment north of Melbourne.

“Dean has always been the most conscientious of professional pilots and always put the safety and well-being of his passengers in the highest of his priorities during his many years of professional service,” the family said in a statement. “Dad was sort of the rock of the family. He pretty much drove the family in everything; where we were going, what we were doing,” Luke Troja said.“We lived in different parts of Australia, we even lived overseas for him – we really looked to him for everything.“He was very generous with his time and he loved his kids.”

The crash in rugged bushland near Blair’s Hut killed five people; Mr Neal and his passengers: a 50-year-old woman from Inverloch, Mr Troja, from Albert Park, and two men from NSW, aged 59 and 70. After the bureau took over the crash site on Friday, Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell said investigators would stay there for at least three days.
