SAN JOSE – A former Bay Area woman has been sentenced to seven years in prison for soliciting funds to help pay for cancer treatments she never needed or received, according to federal prosecutors.In September 2012, Riley, who was then living in San Jose, began to falsely report that she had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
Donations were deposited into Riley’s bank accounts and used to pay her living expenses. Prosecutors said 349 individuals and entities made contributions worth $105,513. The scheme continued until 2019, when it was uncovered by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation and the San Jose Police Department. Riley was criminally charged in July 2020 and pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud on Oct. 12, 2021.
