Democracy activists say Australian judges are taking China’s ‘dirty jobs’ after ex Federal Court chief Justice James Allsop joined Hong Kong’s Final Court of Appeal.

Already a subscriber?Former Federal Court chief justice James Allsop has joined the cohort of Australians on Hong Kong’s top court, replacing former High Court chief justice Murray Gleeson.will join Bill Gummow, Robert French and Patrick Keane as an overseas non-permanent justice on the Court of Final Appeal, a move welcomed by the Hong Kong government.

Mr Gleeson praised the court, which has featured Australian judges since its inception in 1997 – and himself since 2009. Mr Gleeson said his decision was unrelated to his final case in January, when he and four local judges made a unanimous decision to quash the acquittal of activist Chow Hang-tung on a charge of inciting others to join an unauthorised assembly to commemorate the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown.“At the age of 85, and after 15 years, I do not think my departure could be regarded as premature.

John Lee, the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, said Mr Allsop was “a judge of eminent standing and reputation”.
