A former deputy national security adviser in the Trump administration indicated he wouldn't support former President Donald Trump's bid for a second term.
Matthew Pottinger, who served in the position from September 2019 through Jan. 7, 2021, said he was “likely” to support an alternate candidate to his former boss, Trump."Well, look, I'm likely to support other candidates this time around," he said during a Washington Post live event on Monday morning.
Pottinger joins a long list of former Trump administration officials who no longer support the former president's ambition to win a second term, and the group includes a number of politicians considering their own run for the Oval Office, including former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, national security adviser John Bolton, and former Vice President Mike Pence.
So far, Nikki Haley, who served in the Trump administration as the ambassador to the United Nations, and Vivek Ramaswamy, an entrepreneur and political novice, are the only Republicans to join the field with Trump in running for the Republican ticket for the 2024 presidential election. While he hasn't declared his candidacy, Gov. Ron DeSantis is viewed as Trump's biggest challenge to winning the nomination.
