Former UK Prime Minister Sir John Major has written to the 1992 Committee Chairman warning it is “unwise” for outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson to stay in the role while a replacement is chosen.
“The proposal for the Prime Minister to remain in Office – for up to three months – having lost the support of his Cabinet, the Government, and his Parliamentary Party is unwise and may be unsustainable,” he wrote.
Sir John wrote even as caretaker, the prime minister “maintains the power to make decisions which will affect the lives” of people in the United Kingdom and the cabinet may not curtail Mr Johnson if he chooses to use his powers.“I merely note that his previous Cabinet did not – or could not – do so.”
