Former US president Jimmy Carter has died, almost three months after he turned 100 years old, his son Chip has confirmed.

Carter was elected as the 39th president of the United States in 1976, defeating incumbent Gerald Ford, after previously serving in the Georgia State Senate and then as the governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975. Some of his achievements include establishing a national energy policy to deal with the energy shortage, expanding America's national park system and creating the Department of Education to increase human and social services.
