A legal expert has told Sky News that there is"no way" in which today's sentence can be enforced unless Anne Sacoolas is willing to come to the UK.
Sacoolas had diplomatic immunity asserted on her behalf by the US government after the crash in Northamptonshire in 2019.Harry Dunn's family's local MP says it has been"impossible" to get Anne Sacoolas back to the UK after she claimed diplomatic immunity. Andrea Leadsom described the US government advising Sacoolas not to travel to the UK for the sentencing hearing as"totally outrageous".
Harry Dunn's family travelled to the US in October 2019 to highlight the"gross injustice" of Anne Sacoolas's departure from the UK after killing their son. Mrs Charles said she made it clear to those present that Sacoolas had to face justice in the UK before they could meet. Sacoolas had diplomatic immunity asserted on her behalf by the US government after the crash in Northamptonshire.
While Mr Raab said the UK"would have acted differently if this had been a UK diplomat serving in the US", the US state department said the decision to not extradite Sacoolas was"final" in May 2020. The Biden administration advised the former US spy that she did not need to travel to the UK for the hearing.
