Wolston Park closed in 2001, but it remains infamous for widespread allegations of sexual abuse, beatings, chemical restraint and “shock therapy” from the 1950s to 1980s.
Debbie Manson had committed no crime, but there she was in handcuffs, being led out the back of a police car.A razor wire fence towered over the terrified teenager. She wasn't in prison but rather, at Wolston Park Mental Hospital – an asylum in Wacol about halfway between Brisbane and Ipswich."The nurse said you're not leaving the room until you take your underwear off," she says.
First opening in the 1800s, the now-decaying Wolston Park was entrusted to care for as many as 50,000 people while it operated. They speak about her frequent seclusion – for up to six hours at a time – as well as the litany of drugs she was issued and her desire to escape the facility. "I want to know how many of those kids put there with disabilities didn't make it out," she says. "I think the nation would be shocked."
It would take more than a decade, and relentless advocacy from a group of survivors, for the Bligh administration to apologise in 2010 to wards of the state placed in Wolston Park. But she believes a broader inquiry is needed to examine the experiences of many others who were held at the facility.
