A former Woolworths CEO is set to take the reins of Tasmania's new AFL team following months of controversy over the Hobart stadium.
Tasmania received the 19th license to play in the league as part of a major contract deal Premier Jeremy Rockliff signed with the AFL, which paves the way for a long-awaited team and a new stadium to be built by 2028. , the AFL are full steam ahead with Grant O'Brien set to chair Tasmania's new team.
Mr O'Brien rose the ranks to become the head of Woolworths between 2011 and 2016, before being appointed chairman of Tourism Tasmania in 2021, a position he still holds. The Tasmanian-born leader now resides in Sydney but has been a huge advocate for his home state to have its own AFL team for many years.
