A new alliance formed by previously wrongfully detained Australians is set to launch on Wednesday, aiming to support families of those currently facing wrongful detention cases.
Former wrongfully detained Australians to launch advocacy group as Penny Wong pressed to raise Dr Yang Hengjun’s case with Chinese diplomat during Canberra visit
The advocacy group, Australian Wrongful and Arbitrary Detention Alliance , is headed up by high-profile former detainees including founding members Sky News Australia host Cheng Lei, Professor Sean Turnell and director Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert. Mr Turnell, now a senior fellow at the Lowy Institute who was incarcerated in Myanmar for 650 days and released in 2022, spoke to Sky News Australia on Wednesday about why the group was needed.
Mr Turnell said he hopes Dr Yang's case will be brought up in the meeting between China’s Foreign Minister and Ms Wong.“Obviously other countries like Myanmar, Iran, Russia and so on. It’s very difficult but I’m sure it will come up in discussion.”
