Forrest Gump chocolate box sells for £20,500 in time for Valentine's Day Curiously

Tom Hanks’ famous box of chocolates from the 1994 film Forrest Gump has been sold at auction for £20,500 [$25,000].

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! purchased the well-known prop at auction in time for Valentine’s Day. It features in the iconic scene in the film where Forrest refers to his mother's aphorism "Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.", one of the most famous quotes in film.

The box, which is signed by Hanks, is marked as weighing 23 ounces, though the box was filled with just four ounces of sand so that it would not fall off the actor’s lap during filming. Forrest Gump follows the heart-warming story of the eponymous character, who bumbles his way by accident through many of the late 20th century’s biggest events. The film won six Academy Awards in 1995 including best picture, best director and best actor for Hanks.

The film also starred Robin Wright as Jenny Curran and Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan Taylor. It looked at major historical events, including the Vietnam War, segregation in American schools, and the Watergate scandal. But that wasn't the only thing Ripley's acquired at auction, with them also purchasing a personal hand-notated address book belonging to Beatles manager Brian Epstein. The book features the band’s addresses and phone numbers, as well as that of Sir Mick Jagger.

A new film, Midas Man, following Epstein's life is set to be released this year. The biopic about the manager will feature Jacob Fortune-Lloyd as Epstein, Rosie Day as Cilla Black, who was also managed by Epstein, and Jonah Lees, Blake Richardson, Leo Harvey Elledge, and Campbell Wallace as Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr.
