Fortescue chairman Andrew Forrest has hailed the meeting between Anthony Albanese and Xi Jinping as laying “the groundwork for a much more positive relationship” while accusing the Coalition of abandoning the national interest in favour of politics.between an Australian prime minister and the Chinese president in six years took place in Bali on Tuesday.
Forrest, who has substantial iron ore export interests across the region through Fortescue, said he got “nothing but criticism” for being close to China after securing millions of COVID-19 tests from his business networks in Beijing at the request of the Australian government during the first months of the pandemic.
“It’s good that we’re talking with China again, but the real test is whether we get the outcomes,” said the Coalition’s immigration spokesman and former trade minister, Dan Tehan.
