Fort Bend County Judge KP George is speaking out after receiving a flurry of racist and xenophobic messages less than two months before he’s up for re-election on Nov. 8.
, said that although he’s been receiving attacks on his identity since being elected, the hate speech escalated during the pandemic, prompting him to increase his personal security.
George said he blamed the the racist and xenophobic messages he received at the height of the pandemic, in large part, on former President Donald Trump and his anti-immigrant rhetoric. He thinks the marked uptick in hateful messages is due to the upcoming election. George decided to go public about the messages to raise awareness about how some county residents experience xenophobia.
“I want people to know what’s going on because the more people know about it, the more people will come out and denounce it,” he said."If it can happen to me, it can happen to them," he said.Fort Bend County was one of the fastest growing counties in the country in 2021 and over the past 12 years has undergone significant demographic shifts.
The overall county population has grown 47%, and the Asian population nearly doubled, reaching 184,000 people, according to recent census estimates. Latino, Black and white populations have also grown in the same time frame, though at a lower rate."This is not what Fort Bend County stands for.
