Fifteen Russian-born musicians are in the running for the Fort Worth competition.
Nikita Mndoyants of Russia performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 20 in D Minor with the Fort Worth Symphony during the final round of the 2013 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition at Bass Performance Hall.The Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will let Russian pianists, who represent a sizable group of competitors, take part in this year’s competition in Fort Worth.
Following the screening auditions March 6-12, 30 pianists will return to Fort Worth for the first round of the competition June 2. The Cliburn will announce the winners of the competition June 18. Since the Cliburn’s founding in 1962, many of its competitors have been Russian. Four Russian-born pianists have won the gold prize: Vladimir Viardo, Alexei Sultanov, Olga Kern and Alexander Kobrin.
Several classical music groups have recently cut ties with Russian musicians. Last week, Russian conductor Valery Gergiev, a friend and supporter of Russian president Vladimir Putin, was removed from upcoming performances at Carnegie Hall. He was later sacked from his position as chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic after refusing a demand to denounce the invasion.
Russian soprano Anna Netrebko, who has long been associated with Putin, recently withdrew from future performances at the Metropolitan Opera after refusing to distance herself from Putin, according to a statement from the Met. For the Met’s production of Puccini’s
