Why stop when Fashion Week ends? Two debut collections prove ‘Sunday best’ is very much in vogue.
Looking at Michelle Tucker’s clothing, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was made in the 1960s or ’70s. Resplendent with bold, graphic prints in vivid colour, skimming the body and highlighting one’s curves, the pieces have a nostalgia about them – but the designer insists they’re exactly what women need right now.. Her message to guests? “It’s time to dress up again.”
After leaving her bank role and having four children , Tucker took the plunge and launched Anna Antal in 2021. It is an homage to her grandmother, a Hungarian immigrant who spoke little English but found her confidence in fashion. An architecture student who fled her home country during World War II, Antal became a seamstress and designer in her adopted home of Melbourne, although Tucker says her love of architecture could be seen in the clothing she made. Antal opened a boutique in Pascoe Vale in 1960.“It had a real European flair,” says Tucker. “Her pieces were bold, and produced in small quantities. They still inspire me today.
“I underestimated how great the DTC relationship would be,” she says. “It’s been fascinating listening to women and their stories around purchasing. I had a woman who was undergoing treatment for cancer contact me. She wanted a dress that would make her look and feel fantastic. I directed her to the Scarab dress, our hero piece, which symbolises rebirth. She bought it and wore it on a holiday to celebrate going into remission. I think that is just beautiful.
