Former Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop says fossil fuels are “here to stay” as a key part of Australian energy.

“The reality is that up to 80 per cent of everything we use that keeps our lights on, keeps bath water hot … comes from fossil fuel,” she told Sky News host Paul Murray.She said the previous conservative governments “had the opportunity to stop subsiding so-called renewables and put an end to this farce that it’s supposed to be cheap.

“If that had happened, and a market had really worked, you would have coal and gas competing and you would get a good balance in the market.”
