The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade  said it is providing assistance to the four Australians who were in the Turkey region at the time of the earthquake and remain unaccounted for.Foreign minister Penny Wong has announced further aid for Turkey and Syria.

The death toll has now risen to more than 11,000 in the deadliest quake worldwide in more than a decade. "These are urban search and rescue specialists, highly trained to locate, deliver medical assistance to, and remove victims who have been trapped by structural collapse," Wong said.Smoke billows from the scene of a collapsed buildings in Hatay in Turkey.

The federal government is also looking to deploy the Australian Defence Force to the region as soon as possible."These are extremely difficult times, we have been horrified by the scene of devastation and the stories of human tragedy.
