Weather wise, soggy La Nina is in a battle royale with Australia’s heat engine – and at this point it looks like the heat is winning.

But while the Pacific climate driver helped to make November the wettest on record, it’s looking like we could be spared the worst of the wet over Christmas and New Year.

The defining feature of December has been the warmth being funnelled to the south and east from the Pilbara, Australia’s so-called “heat engine”.“An increase in cloud and rain across northern Australia along with cooler southerly winds across southern Australia will cool the air mass across the country and erode the heatwave.”La Nina is also doing its thing, pushing moisture levels up, and that’s leading to changeable conditions.

Brisbane is one of those hot capitals with temperatures nudging 30C on Christmas Day. Indeed it could get as high as 33C on Monday and Tuesday next week. The run up to Christmas in Sydney could be warm too, possibly even hitting 30C on Tuesday, but Christmas Day itself might settle around the mid-twenties with a risk of rain. There could also be showers on Christmas Eve. Similar conditions for the end of the year.

A cooler run into Christmas for Hobart with a string of 20C days but it could get into the mid-twenties for Christmas Day itself and then similar for New Year.Christmas in Adelaide, Perth and Darwin
