Earthmoving business owner Adam Newnes faces another expensive cleanup bill.
The dad-of-three from Oakville in Sydney’s Hawkesbury region spent the weekend moving his earthmoving gear to higher ground at his mate’s place around the corner.
His home, which sits elevated on stilts, is dry enough for now, but he is staring down the barrel of having to refit the fully powered shed for the fourth time since March 2021. The last re-fit bill cost almost $30,000 – and that was only in March in the wake of two floods which hit three days apart.“It’s a flood plain, so what can you do? But when it’s the fourth time in eighteen months ...
The rising cost of insurance means that it’s no longer an option for Newnes and many of his neighbours in the low-lying area next to the Hawkesbury River. One insurance provider gave Newnes a quote of $30,000 for an annual premium. Another quoted upwards of $50,000.Newnes was prepared to cop the shed re-fit bill in March “on the chin” but shelling out the same amount to repair the shed again within three months is a stretch.
“This is worse than last year’s just by the water levels and where it’s risen to. And we know it’s been happening for 150 years and we’ve known about the flooding since 1860, but you never think it’s going to happen,” he said.
