Former defence minister Tobias Ellwood urged the government to increase the budget for the defence and supports a spending review.

Former defence secretaries, senior military officers and war heroes are backing the Mail's campaign for an immediate cash boost for our Armed Forces.

Instead Jeremy Hunt continued to insist the economic conditions had to be right before defence spending could increase. 'We were spending twice as much during the Cold War and now we're facing even hotter threats. We can't have a stronger Armed Forces, a bigger Navy and new aircraft on our current spend.'

Malcolm Rifkind, defence secretary under John Major, said 3 per cent of GDP by 2030 should be the least the UK commits toSir Malcolm said: 'It is not an option, it is a necessity. At a time when we are seeing dreadful Russian aggression and when Trump may weaken the US's Nato commitment, it is essential for the UK and the rest of Europe to increase spending.'

He was joined by former Special Forces commander Major General Jonathan Shaw, former Army intelligence officer Philip Ingram and Colonels Richard Kemp and Hamish de Bretton-Gordon.
