Four more downtown Naperville restaurants are asking the city to raise the limit on the number of restaurants allowed to offer outdoor seating.

During the pandemic, Naperville set up fencing to allow outdoor cafe seating. Six restaurants now have licenses to officially offer it this summer, and four more are asking the city for permission.

Naperville relaxed its outdoor dining regulations in May 2020 to help restaurants weather the COVID-19 pandemic by temporarily allowing sidewalk seating without the need to go through a permit process. The move spurred al fresco dining options throughout downtown and kept restaurants afloat, owners say.AdvertisementChris Mason, owner of Allegory, said outdoor dining was a game changer for him and he wouldn’t be in business without it.

The Lantern representatives asked the council to consider raising the cap for other restaurants, but council members said they preferred to make changes on a case-by-case basis. Commissioner Joe Vozar said fencing helps with pedestrian flow and prevents people from cutting through the dining area.
