Taylor Walker might never have played again. He now most likely has nine Brownlow votes after just three games since returning from suspension. | ANALYSIS by Michael Gleeson

Taylor Walker might never have played again. He now most likely has nine Brownlow votes after just three games since returning from his suspension for racial abuse.

He has kicked four goals a game this year. That is an impressive output for any player but coming in for the first games you have played after so long out was surprising. Even a class player like Toby Greene on Friday night looked a half beat off the rhythm of the game.At 32 today, Walker is playing the best football of his career, or at least as well as he has ever played.

Walker is making players like smart forward Josh Rachele, in just his first season, and callow tall Lachie Gollant better. In the early rounds, the Crows, whose game is about contested football and pressure, saw the ball bouncing out of their forward line but now they are able to create contests and trap the ball forward, so it is no longer trampolining out.

If a runner false starts they don’t keep the seconds on the clock when they start the race again. Why should the seconds lost for a bounce that sprayed sideways just be lost? Why toss away seconds that are so precious in close games? It happened most clearly in the last quarter in Ballarat in a match where it could have been more consequential than it ended up being.
