Former LNP backbencher Andrew Laming has still not paid a $10,360.05 debt to taxpayers, while long-time Liberal Democratic senator David Leyonhjelm has left a much smaller amount unpaid for three years. | seanparnell

Former LNP backbencher Andrew Laming has still not paid a $10,360.05 debt to taxpayers, while long-time Liberal Democratic senator David Leyonhjelm has left a much smaller amount unpaid for three years., Leyonhjelm’s failure to reimburse $252.29 for an airfare in August 2019 means his debt has been on the books of the Independent Parliamentary Expenses Authority the longest.

The documents, released under Freedom of Information laws, suggest McMahon’s debt is made up of several amounts invoiced during 2021 and 2022, summarised as “recovery of Cabcharges, airfares and travel allowances”. Former Labor senator Lisa Singh, who lost office in 2019, was invoiced $373.46 for an airfare shortly before Christmas 2020 and has left it unpaid.Laming has declared he will not be “paying back a cent” to the IPEA, the statutory authority established in 2017 to provide more independent oversight over the expenses of MPs and senators.

In March, the IPEA found Laming was liable to repay $10,360 for travel between Brisbane, Hobart, Melbourne and Canberra during a week in June 2019 in which he was accompanied by his wife and children.
