France, Australia reset under way after $830m subs settlement

Anthony Albanese says the settlement with French company Naval Group will “rule a line” under the torn-up submarine contracts.

| France and Australia have begun to rebuild defence links after ending a diplomatic rift that began when, escalated into personal sniping, and put the bilateral relationship into the deep freeze.

The Albanese government will continue with the AUKUS arrangement but rebuilding the relationship with France has been a priority since the new prime minister was sworn in three weeks ago. The bilateral relationship hit rock bottom last year when President Macron said former Prime Minister Scott Morrison had lied about Australia’s intentions regarding the submarine contact.

Addressing media in Sydney on Saturday, Mr Albanese said his government had reached a fair and equitable settlement with Naval that would “rule a line” under the torn-up contracts. As part of the arrangement, Australia will pay Naval Group $555 million euros .
