Francis S. Collins, the longtime director of the National Institutes of Health who has been a leading voice in the White House battle against Covid-19, announced on Tuesday that he will step down at the end of the year.
Dr. Collins, a 71-year-old physician-geneticist, was appointed to serve as NIH director in 2009 by former President Barack Obama, and he by former President Donald Trump. Through his online director’s blog and numerous media appearances, he has sought to educate and inform the public about Covid-19 vaccines, antivirals and testing.
