Over 50 years ago, the Black Panther Party set a standard for fashion. Now, Lanny Smith, CEO of Actively Black and Fredrika Newton, Co-Founder and CEO of The Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation are partnering to tell that story through their newly released capsule collection, All Power To The People.
"I love fashion. And as a matter of fact, the very day that I met Huey at my mother's house, I was on my way to go downtown to buy some fabric to make an outfit for the next day. I deliberately dressed down that day. I had on purple tie-dye pants and a yellow top in an effort not to look like I was impressed by the fact that he was coming for brunch.
Today, that artistry continues through a merchandise line, All Power To The People Project, founded by Fredrika, and businesswoman and designer, Rachel Konte. "A part of being Actively Black is reclaiming and defining our identity for ourselves. I wanted to do that same thing with this collaboration with the Black Panther Party. This isn't about what everybody else says they were. This is about what we know and who they were to us," said Smith."This is the story that we're going to tell. So many people are still connected to the Black Panthers and what they stood for.
