Parrtjima is the only Aboriginal light festival of its kind and showcases one of the oldest continuous cultures in the world via cutting-edge technology. 9News

Parrtjima - A Festival in Light has returned to the desert near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

Parrtjima is the only Aboriginal light festival of its kind and showcases one of the oldest continuous cultures in the world via cutting-edge technology.Held in Alice Springs since 2016, Parrtjima features a single major work as its centrepiece, along with other large-scale light and sound installations, music, talks, workshops and film. The theme for this year's Parrtjima is Listening with Heart, which is inspired by the artwork surrounding the Statement from the Heart.

Curators say it embodies the concept of "coming together, meeting and taking time to contemplate and reflect". The 2023 installation is by Maruku artist Rene Kulitja, along with a group of artists from Mutitjulu near Uluru. "Gently guided by the soundscapes of Kuniya story, visitors are invited to walk in the footprints of the artwork, and experience a light-scape based on the story of the Mala people," the festival's organisers wrote."The power of song and the reclamation of language and its importance is filtered across the program as we move into a new future, and as Australians seek to know more about the oldest living culture on the planet," she said.
