Failure to secure the deal is a further blow to the Government which has insisted Britain will flourish post-Brexit with free trade deals with countries and regional trade blocs that had previously been closed off by EU membership
The landmark deal to liberalise trade with one of the world’s biggest growing economies is delayed in a blow to the Government’s growth plans
Reasons for the delay have not been given. Previous sticking points have included a steep import duty on British whisky for sale in India, and demands for more visas for Indian students and businesses. Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch said the UK government was focused not on speed but on securing the best deal possible.
A trade deal with India with its £2 trillion economy was seen as such a prize that Prime Minister Truss has taken great personal interest in the negotiations with regular briefings and personal interventions. After meeting the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, in New Delhi in April, the then British PM Boris Johnson said the two leaders had agreed to complete. The aim is to double bilateral trade by 2030, from more than £27.5bn now.
