Transport Secretary makes clear military and veterans can get to events for free, after leaked memo had suggested cost of scheme was ‘seen as too great a loss to taxpayers’Freelance reporter and late editorafter the Transport Secretary confirmed that free travel will be available for veterans attending Remembrance services this year, following reports it had been scrapped.
It is claimed that neither Transport Secretary Anne-Marie Trevelyan nor her ministers had signed off on the decision to cut free travel. On Sunday afternoon, Ms Trevelyan said she had ensured the Rail Delivery Group , which represents rail companies, had issued new guidance to confirm free travel for military personnel and veterans for Remembrance services in 2022.
Posting on Twitter, she wrote: “To travel, just present your MoD ID card or evidence that you are a veteran, such as veterans railcard, to railway staff.”
