From Sydney’s first strip club, to drag cabaret and late night parties – Kings Cross was once the centre of Australia’s after-hours entertainment scene.
Sex worker Julie Bates moved from Melbourne to Kings Cross not long after NSW became the first jurisdiction in the world to decriminalise prostitution in 1979.
Bates was arrested more times than she’d care to count because a quirk in the reformed laws still made brothels illegal. We don’t have to stand like I did seven nights a week freezing my tits off on Liverpool Street, you can work from your own home these days,” she said.
