After 86 days of isolation on the water, Fanch Landron and his partner Sophie Bernier reach Reunion Island in their bright pink rowboat.
In a bright pink rowboat, thousands of kilometres from land, Fanch Landron paused to admire the stars."And when it is a full moon too, you can row like in the day."
Alongside his partner Sophie Bernier, the pair set out in April, navigating bad weather, shark encounters, and 86 days of isolation to complete the epic row across the Indian Ocean. The most perilous moment came midway through the journey, as their 7-metre vessel was lashed by heavy winds and colossal waves.
"The problem was that windows were open … when we capsized and there was water, which inside where we live in the boat. Dr Landron said, while speed was not a priority, he wanted to dedicate the trip to gathering data about ocean plastic in waters rarely reached by researchers. The data was then sent to Dr Margot Thibault, a microplastic expert on Reunion Island, to help map where currents swirled with dense deposits of toothbrushes, bottles, caps, and shopping bags."You are very far from humans, maybe more than 3,000 kilometres … but you can see plastic in the water.
