Three-month-old government of Michel Barnier could be felled by combined vote from parties of left and far right over controversial budget

The prime minister, Michel Barnier, is now wrapping up the debate. “We have reached a moment of truth and a moment of responsibility,” Barnier says. “I acknowledge that the draft budget text was not perfect – that we did not do everything right from the start.” He says France’s financial reality is such that it will have to be confronted by any government, no matter what colour.

France is now paying €60bn a year in interest on its debt, Barnier says, “more than our defence budget and our higher education budget”. He says the budget had been constructed together, taking in suggestions form many of the party groups in the assembly. He has not proposed belt-tightening measures “for my pleasure: I would have preferred to distribute money”.
