PARIS—French lawmakers grilled the nation’s top law-enforcement official about police treatment of soccer fans outside Saturday’s Champions League final near Paris, raising the episode’s political stakes less than two weeks before parliamentary elections that will test support for President Emmanuel Macron.
French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin apologized for what he described as a disproportionate use of tear gas on fans, including near children, and said measures would be taken against police in response. He said France would also help people who had traveled from the U.K. or Spain file complaints against French police from their home countries if they choose.
