The Brazilian Seyboth Wild pulled off the upset in his Roland Garros debut, taking down Medvedev on serve with a forehand to close out the fifth set and win 7-6, 6-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Medvedev, who held the world No. 1 ranking for 16 weeks last year, entered the major tournament having recently won his first clay-court title at the Italian Open.
Medvedev suffered a brief nosebleed in the third set, which he would go on to close out, before losing the fourth set after suffering three double faults. In the fifth set, Seyboth Wild broke the opening game after Medvedev led 40-0. He won the match four hours and 15 minutes after the opening serve.
