The government is confident of a conclusion to the free trade agreement being negotiated with Europe after patching up relations with France
| The Albanese government is confident of a reasonably swift conclusion to the free trade agreement being negotiated with Europe after it patched up relations with France over the cancelled submarines contract.
He said he would push the FTA with every European leader with whom he is holding bilateral meetings while abroad. Since the fall of the Morrison government at the May 21 election, Mr Albanese has spoken by phone to Mr Macron and Australia has compensated French shipbuilder Naval Group $835 million, taking the total lost by taxpayers to $3.4 billion, which is lower than the original $5.5 billion estimate.
Despite Labor’s criticism of how the government handled the cancellation of the French submarine contract, it remains committed to the AUKUS pact, something reaffirmed on Tuesday by Defence Minister Richard Marles.
