Little did they know they would put their experience to use to deliver their own baby in the back of a van in a fast food restaurant car park.They knew from experience to stop somewhere easy for an ambulance to findAt 8.45pm on August 26, the Port Stephens couple were on their way to Belmont Hospital, about 70 kilometres away, when Sam's water broke.
"Working in the communication centre you know that you need to be somewhere central, that's got good visibility, that has a bit of space," Sam said.Sam Paul said there were no complications during her birth.Liz called for an ambulance but it was soon clear one wouldn't arrive in time. "Jane let us know that there were no ambulances in the area and that we would be delivering the baby," Liz said.With guidance from the midwife on speakerphone, Sam began pushing in the back of the van.
"I just had a contraction and [our baby] Andy's head was out and then Jane said 'get ready to catch her, because she's coming'," Sam said."Liz grabbed her out and put her on my chest," Sam said. "We didn't even know what we were gonna have so we had to take her off and have a look and I thought 'look, we've got a girl'."
