If history is anything to go by, Friday night’s semi-final clash between the Sharks and Cowboys will be must-watch television .
Golden point has been needed to decide two of those, while one of the biggest referee blunders NRL history overshadowed a Sharks win back in 2013. While the Cowboys have had the better of the Sharks in finals games, Cronulla have proven to be somewhat of a bogey team for North Queensland. The Cowboys would progress to a home preliminary final, and despite leading the Eels by eight points in the second half, coughed up that lead in a 24-20 loss.
Cronulla had the right to be hard down by in this one, given the penalty the Cowboys received for a Sharks attempted strip should not have been awarded after replays showed North Queensland knocked the ball on cold. This time around, it would be the Sharks to outplay the Cowboys, with veteran playmaker James Maloney starring.
It would set up a grand final between Cronulla and Melbourne, which the Sharks would win 14-12, delivering the club their first ever NRL premiership win. Meanwhile, the Sharks kept their season alive with a 28-12 win against Souths in an elimination final.
