As WGA members put their pens down again, a look back on the last industry-shifting strike
The union has fought for a guaranteed number of on-the-job weeks for TV staffers, pay structures to compensate for the residual fees eliminated by streaming, and regulations to rein in the looming existential threat of artificial intelligence.
The WGA also went on strike in 1988, during which time executives at Fox circumvented the lack of available writers by developing Cops, a compilation of unscripted vérité footage documenting the encounters of on-duty police officers; reality TV likewise exploded in 2008 as a quick and cheap way to generate content unencumbered by creative inspiration.

‘This is some turnaround’: Govt set to record first budget surplus in 15 yearsSky News can reveal the government is expecting to record a surplus for the 2022-23 year – the first surplus recorded by a federal government since 2007-08, according to Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell. Mr Clennell said in that year the Rudd and Howard governments shared a surplus result of $19.7 billion. “Government sources have told Sky News that final revenue numbers have come through this week with improved commodity results which show that a surplus will be recorded this year but the budget is still in structural deficit with deficits in years to come,” he said. “My understanding is that a modest increase to JobSeeker across the board and further cost of living assistance has been considered in light of this result. “This is some turnaround after the forecast in the October budget of a deficit result of $37 billion.”

Talk shows cancelled amid strike amongst TV and film writersThousands of Hollywood writers have headed to the picket line in the first walkout for more than 15 years. This means popular late-night talk shows could go dark. The people who write the material for America’s TV and film industry have walked out in a pay dispute, bringing production to a halt.
