How wise. Decades before Slip, Slop, Slap bathers in Bondi were apparently aware of the need to cover up.
The captions reads: “Beachgoers at Bondi Beach c1889-1894 and the Borough of Waverley bylaw declared: ‘Any person who, except in a public bath and proper bathing dress, shall bathe near to or within view of any inhabited house, reserve, or place of public resort, between the hours of 8 o’clock in the morning and 8 o’clock in the evening, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding five pounds nor less than five shillings.
Bathing caps were a necessary part of any bathing outfit, to prevent the problem of wet, untidy and unladylike hair.By the 1930s, boys seemed to be comfortable in a one-piece. One company selling a similar design online today says it is keen to relive “our proud past. Our aim is to honour such legends as waterman Johnny Weissmuller, the early Tarzan, and Duke Kahanamoku, the Hawaiian swimming champion who introduced surfing to Australia in 1915.
It seemed not much had changed by November the following year and another letter. “Lugger” is also concerned about skinny dipping in the bays.
