Bundjalung man Carl King says as a child he fell in with a troubled crowd, and later suffered the grief of his brother's death. But community-focused boxing has helped him stay grounded and 'out of trouble'.
When Bundjalung man Carl King started boxing at the age of six, he admits he didn't take it too seriously.
And through all the twists and turns his life has taken him, Mr King said boxing has been what kept him grounded."The crowd I was hanging out with, they had a massive impact on me growing up … and boxing pulled me away from them," Mr King said. Mr King said he hoped to follow in the footsteps of his coach and the founder of Cuz Boxing, Bundjalung man Joe Hedger.Cuz Boxing founder Joe Hedger says seeing Carl King's transformation over two decades has been "nothing short of remarkable"."Twenty years ago, this young kid who just had this abundance of energy, but also had, I guess, a lot of behavioural issues," Mr Hedger said.
While Mr Hedger acknowledged boxing wasn't the only thing that could help people, he said it was a good option for many who passed through the gym. And he said the next generation of boxers in the community was continuing to make strides, particularly for women.
