Greg Munar, a former offender, has become an Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) in his remote community, serving as a role model and bridge between the police and Aboriginal people. His story highlights the importance of ALOs, especially in a year marked by racial tensions between police and Aboriginal communities.
Greg Munar broke out of a cycle of crime and dysfunction and now works as an NT Police Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO). Senior officers say ALOs have never been more important, after a year where racial tension s between police and Aboriginal people have made headlines.Mr Munar wants the next generation in his remote community, located in one of the most disadvantaged areas in Australia, to see his journey as an inspiration. Now in his 50s, he's freely got the keys to them.
Mr Munar is a dedicated and respected member of the Northern Territory Police Force in his home community in the NT's remote west. For the past seven years, Mr Munar has worked as an Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) in Wadeye, a role he sees as an important bridge between his community and the force. 'I sometimes talk to young people, 'why are you working for the police?',' Mr Munar said.'I want to be an ALO, working for the community … they know me because I'm a lore man, a ceremony man.'Mr Munar hopes his story can inspire the young people in Wadeye, a sign of proof that some are able to break out of the cycle of crime and dysfunction. He hit rock bottom when he was sentenced to prison for armed robbery with a butcher's knife — but he wouldn't stay down there forever.'Because I got a wife and a son and all my little grandchildren.Mr Munar is now a leading figure in the region's Littiga ceremony group. Recently, he worked alongside a group of ALOs from across the NT, to help keep the peace during a large music and cultural festival and footy match in Wadeye.
