San Antonio knitting instructor whips up X-rated designs
Author and needlecraft artist Haley Pierson-Cox creates all sorts of cross-stitch designs that include irreverent spins on classic patterns. One of her first books was"Improper Cross-Stitch," which includes an Art Deco-inspired version of the F-word.Back in the mid-2000s, San Antonio knitting instructor Wendy Moreland was joking online with some knitting buddies about crafting a sock pattern that reflected their group’s personality.
“I like things that turn something a little bit on its side, edge,” said Moreland, whose knitting lessons at theOn ExpressNews.com:Many of these provocative pieces blow up convention with a well-stitched F-bomb and middle-finger attitude, whether it's speaking truth to power, speaking up for emotional and mental wellbeing or just, well, talking dirty.
“At that point, DIY started strongly intersecting with feminism,” she said. “When that happened, some of the more fun and playful things that you can do with a very traditional craft started coming out. Some of them are unexpected things and some of them have really strong messages.” “People think that these are ‘ladylike’ crafts,” Moreland said. “And the whole ‘ladylike’ thing has been culture pretending that we don’t have anything that’s not clean and perfect and elegant and civilized, like people thinking women didn’t know swear words.“You can talk like a sailor and be kind,” she said, “but you can super polite and nice and be a Karen.”
