Few jewels are as instantly recognisable as Bulgari’s Serpenti.

VogueFew jewels are as instantly recognisable as Bulgari’s Serpenti, whether it’s wending its way up an arm or around the throat. An enduring favourite for stars of screen and style alike, the iconic serpent celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2023, and Bulgari is kicking off the celebrations with an immersive exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery.is the second chapter from award-winning artist Refik Anadol of an AI-generated digital show that first opened in Milan last year.

With a history that stretches back to Ancient Greece and Egypt, there are few more enduring motifs in jewellery than the serpent. It has variously been a symbol of strength, wisdom and eternal love, and it reached new heights of popularity during the 19th century, when Queen Victoria wore an engagement ring shaped like a snake that wound its way around her finger. By the 20th century, however, it was not a single person but a single jeweller that became synonymous with the creature.

Bulgari created its first Serpenti watch in 1948, with a sprung tubogas bracelet that wound itself elegantly around the wrist. It was 14 years later in 1962 that the serpent became internationally famous, thanks to a publicity shot of Elizabeth Taylor on the set ofin Rome, wearing one in the form of an ornate diamond watch. The film had become a hot topic in gossip columns around the world, thanks to its budget-busting overruns and the love affair between Taylor and her co-star, Richard Burton.

Taylor embodied the confidence, glamour and sex appeal required to carry off Serpenti jewels, and while the iconic creature has evolved over time, it remains a favourite with powerful women of style and screen.takes a look back at 10 women who have embraced the legendary jewelled serpent, and made it their own.at the Saatchi Gallery in London, book tickets free at
