“The garage party is all about the whole room singing along,” Pohatu says. “Even if you’re not a great singer it doesn’t matter, it’s about the inclusivity. Its distinctiveness is hard to pinpoint, but Williams believes it is recognisable through its “use of muting and its feathery, dull percussion”. Dr Michael Brown, the music curator at the Alexander Turnbull Library, captured some of its history in his doctoral thesis.
