As a child, I naively hoped that the U.S. military would intervene and I would see a free Iran during my lifetime. As an adult, I have learned that change must come from within.
Thousands of Iranians hold anti-government protests on Sept. 21 the death of a woman who was detained by the morality police, in downtown Tehran, Iran. As many as 50 people were killed. On Sunday, Sept. 25, thousands of Iranian pro-government demonstrators hold posters of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the country's flags during their rally condemning the earlier protests.
But this new world in which I found myself differed vastly from the depiction of Iran in the U.S. news, and, more strangely, the picture my parents painted of the home they were forced to leave behind. At 13, it was difficult to reconcile the kindness and generosity of Iran’s people when eating dinner at a restaurant proudly displaying a “Death to America” sign.
This brief encounter came flooding back into my mind when the world learned of the tragic death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested by, and died needlessly at the hands of, Iran’s morality police. Her death sparked righteous outrage and protests in Iran and abroad, as well as it should. Her crime? Violating the hijab rules.
