In the US, CNN talk show host Larry King died aged 87 in January after being hospitalised with COVID-19.The music industry mourned Michael Gudinski who died in October aged 68. A pioneer of the Australian music industry as a record executive and promoter, Split Enz, Jimmy Barnes and Kylie Minogue benefited from his eye for talent.
Music also lost Mary Wilson, co-founder of The Supremes, who died aged 76. Gerry Marsden, the British musician and lead singer of Gerry and the Pacemakers, died aged 78. Phil Spector, the music producer who created the “Wall of Sound” with The Crystals and The Ronettes in the 1960s but murdered actress Lana Clarkson in 2003, died of natural causes in a prison hospital in California at the age of 81.
The business world lost three colourful characters. Controversial Australian businessman Geoffrey Edelsten died aged 78 in June. By his description, he was a “white knight” for the Sydney Swans in 1985 as they faced dire financial pressure. John Elliott, businessman, state and federal president of the Liberal Party and a president of the Carlton Football Club, died aged 79 in September. He frequently provoked controversy due to brushes with the law and his abrasive personal style.
