Improved pedestrian and bike paths near schools, better crosswalks, road extensions, connections and roundabouts make up most of the suggestions.
It’s a story that has played out over and over in the Hill Country city, going back decades. The twist in this chapter is that Central Texas now is growing faster than anywhere else in the country. Boerne doesn’t want to turn into a rapidly developing, loop-enclosed city like New Braunfels, which recently announced it wouldBut its growth goes on — Boerne’s population went up 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, and Kendall County grew 33 percent. The U.S.
Durden said there’s “resignation” among area residents. Traffic and construction are part of the fabric of modern Boerne; some citizens lampooned this when the city unveiled a new logo in August by making logos of what they felt represented Boerne. One of the most popular logos depicted a construction barricade blocking a winding road, an increasingly common sight in the Hill Country.
On Texas Highway 46, three straight roundabouts near Champion High School could keep traffic flowing and lower the number and severity of collisions, Durden said. The roundabouts also allow the expression of the area’s character in their design features. Nevertheless, Boddie said, “I think a majority of the projects in here are definitely attainable projects that will improve connectivity and way of life within Boerne proper.”
